Isn’t memory loss normal when someone gets older?

Memory loss is not necessarily a given as we age.  Certain forgetfulness is common in both the young and old.  Memory loss that affects daily living is not a normal part of aging.

If someone has problems with their memory, does that mean they have Alzheimer’s disease?

There are a number of medical conditions that can lead to memory loss.  Not all memory loss is due to Alzheimer’s disease.

What is dementia?

Dementia is a set of symptoms indicating loss of mental function in areas such as language, visual/spatial abilities, and judgment as well as memory.  Dementia is diagnosed when two or more areas of functioning are affected.

What are some other types of dementia?

Vascular dementia, Lewy Body dementia and Frontal-Temporal dementia (Pick’s Disease) are all other types of dementia and are not Alzheimer’s Disease.  There are other types of dementia that are related to illnesses such as Parkinson’s Disease and Huntington’s Disease as well.  The many types of dementia have similar characteristics but also some different features as well.
