Mild memory loss is perfectly normal, especially as we age. Short-term and remote memories aren't usually affected by aging. Also, recent memory may be affected. For example, you may forget names of people you've met recently. These are normal changes. Dementiais a group of symptoms caused by gradual death of brain cells. Dementia is usually caused by degeneration in the cerebral cortex, the part of the brain responsible for thoughts, memories, actions and personality. Death of brain cells in this region leads to the cognitive impairment which characterizes dementia.
Lewy Body and Vascular Dementia are other types of dementia.
