Rob is never sure what he should be doing or where he sould be.
no knack: The staff tell Rob "you have to go into the dining room now! If you don't go, we won't give you lunch."
knack: Walk over to Rob and say "Come on with me now Rob, it's lunch time and you have a seat waiting for you!"
Rob's room was changed (why oh why I don't know) so he continues to go into his old room looking for his things.
no knack: "Rob! You don't belong here! Go to your own room!"
knack: "Oh hey Rob, Are you looking for your bed? Let me help you find it." Take him to the new room. "Here it is Rob. See, here are your things, here is your bed."

Keeping the strategies of humor, love, flexibility, good timing, undrstanding, respect, and knowing the person's life story can give staff obtions when the resident is objecting to a needed function such as bathing. Changing the time by being flexible, or using a fact from his life story can get the resident to go along with the needed function in an aggreeable mannor.
Staff should have access to information regarding the person's life story. Knowing the whole person can lead to more understanding and respect and give hints on how to effectively communicate by using pieces from his/her life story.
Having a shadow box or picture as a reference for not only the care givers to strike a conversation with the residents, but to have a visiual or a "show & tell" point to of reference for the resident to talk about themself and know that is where they live, they belong here. A lap basket is also something we use to tell a story or a "Knack", it is a basket with a few persoanl items about the resident that tell a story, and kept in an open activity room and easy to get to for friends, family and staff members to use.
Mark, It's time for the activity. If you don't come now I'm not sure you can have your lunch next. You might have to wait quite a while.
Mark: You always loved to throw the ball around like when you played baseball in school. We are doing that now and having lunch right after. Why don't we walk over to the activity now.
Phyllis is always wondering why her daughter is not there visiting today. "She will be here later after work, Phyllis."
On weekends if the daughter is out of town, I get Phyllis to help me sort socks that she loves to do...and we play with different colored ones and talk about rainbows.
