Would advise Gwen to learn more about the AD so that she could respond more appropriatley to Betty and offer her support, suggesting that she might go to a support group, take some classes on AD.
And simply talk to her and let her know how Betty feels after she leaves and give her some tips on how to communicat with Betty better.
